Graham’s planning board last week endorsed a proposed rezoning for property along East Harden Street (NC 54).
The .73-acre lot at 1528 East Harden Street, beside Riverside Baptist Church, is currently zoned R-18 (low density residential).
The planning board unanimously (6-0) recommended the requested change from property owner Dewey Brown to revise the zoning to B-2, general commercial.
Brown wants to allow American Aquascapes and Water Gardening, which had been displaced from another property Brown owns just down the road (at the corner of NC 54 and Jim Minor Road) that is now being converted to a Sheetz gas station and convenience store, to set up operations on the property. The new location will also include U-Haul rentals, it was noted.
The agenda item had been carried over from the planning board’s July meeting when no one representing Brown came to the meeting. Meanwhile, earlier this month, the city council approved the annexation request for the same property.
The motion to approve the rezoning was 6-0, supported by board chairman Dean Ward, vice chairman John Wooten, and board members Michael Benesch, Chad Huffine, Elizabeth Kirkpatrick, and Richard Shevlin. Planning board member Tony Bailey was absent.
