Alamance Community College officials held a swearing-in ceremony for the community college’s new chief of police/director of public safety, Charles “Chuck” Evitt.
Evitt, who was sworn in earlier this month, has more than three decades of experience in law enforcement and public safety. He has previously worked for the Morganton department of public safety, the Reidsville police department, and the Bald Head Island department of public safety, according to ACC officials.
“Chief Evitt is a seasoned law enforcement professional with a heart for service and community,” ACC president Dr. Ken Ingle said following the ceremony. “His extensive experience and commitment to community policing align perfectly with our college’s mission to ensure a safe, welcoming, and student-centered environment.”
Evitt has focused much of his career on community-oriented policing, working to build trust and positive relationships between law enforcement and the citizens they serve, ACC officials said earlier this month. He holds a degree in criminal justice from Western Piedmont Community College in Morganton.
A graduate of Western Piedmont Community College with a degree in Criminal Justice, Evitt has also completed advanced law enforcement leadership training through the North Carolina Justice Academy’s Management Development Program and three leadership programs through the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (FBI-LEEDA). He replaces former ACC police chief/director of public safety James Armstrong.
The trustees had voted in November 2017 to create a campus police department with its own sworn police force, which ACC officials had said at the time was in line North Carolina’s 58 community colleges.
