The owner of a construction/material warehouse with locations in Burlington and Durham has been arrested on four counts of embezzlement for allegedly failing to pay state sales taxes for six years.
The North Carolina Department of Revenue announced Monday that Ubaldo Torres Rodriguez, 56, Hispanic, male, was arrested Monday on four counts of embezzlement of state property for allegedly failing to pay state sales taxes for two construction/material warehouse companies.
Rodriguez has been charged with embezzlement for allegedly failing to pay $151,108.23 in state sales taxes for Sun HS Warehouse of Burlington, LLC, which has its registered office at 1524 North Church Street, from February 1, 2018 to July 31, 2024. He is also charged with embezzlement for allegedly failing to pay $273,978.72 in sales taxes for Sun HS Warehouse Group, LLC at 607 Ellis Road in Durham from January 1, 2016 to October 31, 2017, as well as from June 1, 2018 to November 30, 2024, the N.C. Department of Revenue stated Monday in a release.
Rodriguez was placed under a $200,000 unsecured bond and given a July 27 court date in Wake County superior court.
“Indictments allege that Rodriguez, president and the responsible person of Sun HS Warehouse Group, LLC and Sun HS Warehouse of Burlington, aided and abetted the businesses to embezzle, misapply, and convert to their own use North Carolina Sales Taxes,” the revenue department stated Monday in a release.
The charges followed an investigation by special agents within the Criminal Investigations Division for the N.C. Department of Revenue.
A traffic citation that the Graham police department issued to Rodriguez earlier this year listed his home address as 111 North Guthrie Avenue in Durham.
Torres was stopped near the intersection of Washington Street and Providence Road in Graham on February 17, 2026 and cited by Graham police detective Noah Sakin for displaying an expired registration/license plate by the Graham police department. The case was dismissed on February 25, after he paid the $193 ticket and a $25 fine, according to his Alamance County court file.
