Police seek robbery suspect who passed himself off as officer

Police in Burlington are looking for a man who allegedly impersonated one of their own in order to apprehend some cash from an unsuspecting civilian last month.

According to the city’s police department, the victim of this counterfeit cop was walking along the 900 block of East Webb Avenue on the evening of March 21 when he was approached by a man in a silver-colored Ford Explorer who identified himself as a police officer. This self-styled officer reportedly demanded the pedestrian’s wallet and removed an undetermined amount of cash before he drove off in his vehicle.

According to the police department, the victim has described the suspect in this case as 30 to 40 years old and “Middle Eastern” in appearance. He was also said to have dark eyes, black hair, “minimal facial hair,” and tattoos on his right arm. He was reportedly wearing a black shirt on the night of the robbery and carried a black handgun inside his waistband.

The police department has also obtained security footage of the suspect’s Explorer, which appears to be of a 2020 vintage or later.
