Conference tournament basketball schedules have been altered involving some Alamance County teams.
The Central 3-A Conference and Mid-Carolina Conference have made significant changes because of the potential for wintry weather coming by mid-week. Both leagues are continuing with a format that could get all slated games played.
The Central 3-A Conference has moved all the quarterfinals to Monday night at the sites of the higher seeds. The semifinals Tuesday will be split between Western Alamance for the girls and Orange for the boys.
The league was going to have all semifinals and finals at Orange. As for the finals, those could be played Wednesday rather than remaining on Friday night, though that decision could be in flux.
The Mid-Carolina Conference was supposed to have quarterfinals Tuesday at home sites and semifinals Wednesday and Thursday nights at Southeast Alamance followed by Friday’s championship games.
Instead, the conference is moving all quarterfinal games to Monday night and then will hold semifinals Tuesday night at the sites of the higher seeds. The finals are still scheduled for Friday night at Southeast, though more adjustments could be made.
Also in the Mid-Carolina Conference, Southeast Alamance’s girls won a coin toss and are the No. 1 seed ahead of Seaforth. The teams both had 14-1 conference records.
On the boys’ side, Southeast won a coin toss with Chatham Central to take the No. 2 seed, with the Bears left at No. 3. Both teams were 13-3 in league play and split two matchups. Northwood went 16-0.
Other conferences have taken different approaches to contest their tournaments.
For instance, the Mid-Piedmont Conference, a six-school Class 3-A group with most schools in Davidson County (plus one in Montgomery County and one in Randolph County), opted to nix the quarterfinals and involve only four boys’ and four girls’ teams with the goal of finishing the tournament in two days. That would wrap up Tuesday night.
