14-vote margin separates second-, third-place finishers
Alamance County’s board of elections will hold a special meeting on Wednesday to address one final loose end from this month’s municipal elections.
At 5:30 that afternoon, the board’s members will conduct a formal recount in the race for Graham’s city council, where a razor-thin margin separates two of the contenders in this year’s four-way race for two available seats on the council.
According to the official vote tally that the board of elections ratified on Friday, political newcomer Jim Young clinched the second of these seats by a mere 14 votes over fellow newbie Randy Phillips. Young’s lead had been as high as 17 votes on Election Night before the elections office factored in provisional ballots and other votes that weren’t part of the original tally.
The current 14-vote margin falls within the statutory threshold for Phillips to call for a recount, which he did on Monday morning – less than a day before the state-imposed deadline to make such a request.
The recount will take place at the county’s elections office at 1128 South Main Street in Graham.
