River Mill’s boys’ soccer team made it to the third round of the Class 1-A state playoffs before Monday’s setback to visiting East Wake.
Seventh-seeded East Wake scored twice in the second overtime session for a 3-1 victory, moving on to the East Region semifinals.
The best season in program history for No. 2 seed River Mill (21-3) came to a close. Braydon Gregory scored on a first-half assist from Colton Risen for the Jaguars, who took that 1-0 lead to halftime.
River Mill, the Central Tar Heel 1-A Conference champion, won a second-round game last Thursday by topping visiting No. 15 seed Eno River 4-2. Diego Gonzalez and Isaac Gonzalez each had two goals, while Gregory provided two assists and Risen posted one assist.
Class 3-A
Central 3-A Conference champion Western Alamance lost in the second round, falling 2-1 to host Lee County last Thursday night in Sanford.
Each team scored in the first half before the seventh-seeded Yellow Jackets tallied the winner in the second half. No. 10 seed Western Alamance (15-6-3) had a 12-game unbeaten streak snapped.
The season ended for Lee County (19-7) on Monday night with a 2-1 loss at second-seeded Greenville Rose.
