School board reelects chairman, elects new vice chairman

Alamance-Burlington school board members voted 7-0 Monday night to reelect Sandy Ellington-Graves to a third, one-year term as the board’s chairman.

They also voted unanimously Monday night to elect Donna Westbrooks as their vice chairman, replacing Ryan Bowden as vice chairman.

Bowden nominated Westbrooks for the vice chairmanship but made no other remarks about why he wasn’t seeking another term as vice chairman.

There were no other nominations for the chairmanship or the vice chairmanship Monday night.  The terms for both offices are one year.

Bowden, Ellington-Graves, and Westbrooks are all first-term incumbents who were elected to the school board in November 2020.  None of the trio had yet filed to run in the 2024 school board race by press time.

Nor had any other candidates filed for the 2024 school board race, according to the latest filing details posted late Wednesday by Alamance County’s Board of Elections.

Four seats on the ostensibly nonpartisan school board will be up for grabs in the November 2024 general election, including the one vacated earlier this year by four-term board member Patsy Simpson, who resigned to move to Virginia.

While there has been widespread political chatter that Bowden, a Republican, is considering a run for one of the three seats on Alamance County’s board of commissioners that will be in play next year, he had not done so by press time, according to the county’s Board of Elections.

Bowden had not responded to an inquiry by The Alamance News as of press time Wednesday night.

The filing period began at 12:00 noon on Monday and is scheduled to run through 12:00 noon on Friday, December 15.
