Seven hurt, four taken to hospital after school bus wreck in southern Alamance

Seven students were injured, including four who were taken to the hospital at UNC-Chapel Hill when a school bus carrying elementary-age students had a wreck off NC 87 South in southern Alamance County Thursday morning.


THURSDAY NIGHT UPDATE:

The school system reported at 10:00 p.m. Thursday night that five students remain at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital for treatment and observation.


School Bus #342, which serves B. Everett Jordan Elementary School, was involved in a wreck when it hit a building off NC 87 near Judge Sharpe Road.

Four students were hurt, four of whom [later updated to six] were taken to UNC hospital, according to information provided by the school system. Superintendent Dr. Dain Butler later said there were 18 students on the bus at the time of the accident.

The Alamance County sheriff’s office, Highway Patrol, and Fire assisted at the scene along with ABSS staff.

No reason for the accident, nor condition of the driver, has been provided. The school system did subsequently report that the driver stayed on the scene until every child was taken from the bus and transported either by their family or by EMS.
