North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey has promoted Barry Smith to the role of deputy director of communications and safety officer at the N.C. Department of Insurance (NCDOI).
A native of Chatham County, Barry Smith graduated from Southern Alamance High School in 1974 and received a B.A. in journalism from UNC-Chapel Hill.
Before coming to the Department of insurance in 2017, Smith worked as a journalist for various North Carolina newspapers for 39 years. He recently served as assistant director of public affairs in the department.
