Western Alamance cranked out a strong second half to hand visiting Graham its first loss of the season in Monday night’s Mid-Carolina Conference opener for boys’ soccer.
Grant Bacchus scored three goals as the Warriors won 6-1. Jessy Perez, Franky Maya and Edwin Anguiano had the other goals for Western.
“I think we’re doing the job offensively,” Western coach Camden Brooks said. “Not winning them how I want to win them. Figuring out what’s going to work and where people fit best.”
Western, a two-time reigning state champion, is 7-1-1, but the Warriors have allowed 15 goals after giving up 12 goals in 29 games last year.
“We just need to do a little bit more effort,” Maya said. “We have the talent.”
Bacchus said: “There has been a fall-off from last year and we know that. We’re getting it together.”
In the Graham game, Perez scored the only first-half goal with a tap-in from in front of the net.
Graham’s Ian Maya, who had a first-half shot bounce off the top of the crossbar, pulled the Red Devils within 2-1 with more than 30 minutes to play. Then beginning with about 15½ minutes left, the Warriors cranked up for four goals in slightly more than a 10-minute stretch.
Last week, Western held on for a 4-3 victory at Seaforth and then won 5-1 at home vs. Southwestern Randolph in the second meeting of the season between 2025 state champions. Against Southwestern Randolph, Maya had three goals and Bacchus and Anguiano each had a goal.
Graham’s record reached 5-0-1 with last Thursday’s 5-3 home victory vs. Eastern Guilford.

Eastern’s 5-1 home victory vs. Roxboro Person on Monday came with goals from Marvin Mazariego, Bodhi Brinker, Jesus Camacho Covarrubias, Luke Williams and Charlie Lowe.
- Southeast Alamance won 8-0 vs. visiting Rockingham County last week with Noah Teabout posting five goals and then 12-0 vs. visiting Southern Alamance on Monday with six more goals for Teabout. Rodrigo Arellano and Ethan Martinez each had two goals vs. Southern.
- Clover Garden clobbered visiting Southern Wake 9-3 on Monday in the Central Tar Heel 1-A Conference to build on last week’s 3-2 league victory at Central Carolina Academy.
- Burlington Christian Academy lost 5-1 to visiting Forsyth Country Day School in Tuesday’s Piedmont Triad Athletic Conference game. Jake Hethcox scored for the Royals.
- The Burlington School won 3-1 at Cape Fear Christian on Tuesday.
- Alamance Christian School won its fifth in a row by defeating host Liberty Christian of Durham by 4-0 on Tuesday.
