Southeast Alamance’s Donnie Fairley soared in for a jaw-dropping highlight dunk to end the first quarter of Tuesday night’s boys’ basketball showdown at Eastern Alamance.
As it turned out, that putback slam at the buzzer was just getting the Stallions started in their 101-63 runaway in front of a capacity crowd in Mebane as the Mid-Carolina Conference reached the midway mark on the schedule.
“I’ve had a lot of (dunks), but not like that,” Fairley said.
Davian Edwards racked up 29 points, Fairley finished with 25 points, 14 rebounds and six assists, and James Kenan had 13 points for the Stallions (13-3 overall, 7-0 Mid-Carolina Conference).
The outcome prevented Eastern (11-4, 5-2) from holding a share of first place in the league. Jamarious Toney had 11 points and Hunter Eichmann added 10 points for the Eagles.
“We’re just getting better,” Southeast coach Bo Williamson said. “To anyone else, it may be a surprise. But anyone in that locker room, we know we’ve been working hard.”
Fairley’s emphatic play gave the Stallions a 21-15 lead, and they built on that momentum. Landon Gardner, Deray Fairley, and Nate Yellock all hit 3s before Donnie Fairley’s basket off a rebound pushed the score to 40-20. It was 48-29 at halftime.
The edge expanded to 75-45 through three quarters.
“We’re extremely together and did things the right way,” said Donnie Fairley, who shot 11-for-14 from the field.
Both teams had strong conference victories Friday. Southeast topped visiting Roxboro Person 77-53, while Eastern rolled past visiting Graham 87-49 with Xavier McPherson notching 17 points to offset 15 points from Graham’s Micah Woods.
Eastern lost 83-80 to visiting Seaforth in last Thursday’s non-conference game as McPherson had 24 points and Christian Hester scored 18.
