The start of the season for Southern Alamance’s boys’ soccer team has stalled.
The school has yet to announce the hiring of a coach. The name of a would-be coach who has been recommended through the hiring process will be presented next week to the Alamance-Burlington School System’s Board of Education seeking approval, ABSS athletics director Todd Davis said.
Originally scheduled games involving Southern across the first couple weeks of the season have been nixed. Southern’s opener is now listed as August 24 at Eastern Guilford.
- Western Alamance, a defending state champion, had its scheduled season opener called off Monday when Greensboro Grimsley officials cited unfavorable field conditions. The game was scheduled to be played in Greensboro.
Western is slated to travel to Southwestern Randolph on Wednesday night in a matchup between two 2026 state champions.
Last November, Western won in Class 5-A a day after Southwestern Randolph claimed the Class 4-A title. The teams will meet in a second non-conference game September 10 at Western.
Volleyball
The season began this week for several area teams.
Bartlett Yancey defeated visiting Clover Garden 25-17, 25-18, 21-25, 25-19 in the season opener for both teams Monday.
- Eastern Alamance won 20-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-21 at Durham Riverside in its first match Tuesday. Morgan Beckham had five aces among her 21 service points, Bayleigh Burris provided 10 kills and Bailey Blalock made 21 digs for the Eagles.
- Rockingham County overcame visiting Williams to win 26-28, 25-22, 21-25, 25-10, 15-8 in Tuesday night’s opener.
- The Burlington School was swept in three sets by host Mount Tabor on Tuesday night in Winston-Salem.
