Stuck in traffic

An apparent mismatch between a round “peg” and a rectangular “hole” left traffic in downtown Burlington snarled for nearly two hours on Tuesday.

According to Burlington’s police department, this error in special recognition occurred at about 2:20 p.m. when someone tried to haul a massive water tank through a railroad underpass near the juncture of North Church Street and West Webb Avenue.

The metallic tank ultimately became wedged in the underpass, leading to backups along Webb Avenue and Church Street before workers cleared the scene shortly before 4:20 p.m.
