ANSWER: Contrary to what one of the public speakers said at the commissioners’ budget public hearing on Monday, June 5 – Alamance County does not have the lowest property tax rate in the state. Rather, the county is bunched in the middle of tax rates.

In fact, 45 of North Carolina’s 100 counties had lower property tax rates than Alamance County as of the 2020-21 fiscal year, the latest period for which the data are available, according to the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC).

The statewide average tax rate was .6760 per $100 – in line with Alamance County’s rate of 0.67 cents per $100 – during the 2020-21 fiscal year, according to the latest tax rate survey by the NCACC.
