TUESDAY: “No speed” rail comes to Elon; train stuck on railroad tracks; all three Elon crossings closed

The town of Elon became a de facto “train stop” this morning as a passing freight train ground to an unexpected halt on its way through the community.

According to Elon’s town manager Richard Roedner, this unscheduled stop occurred at about 5:30 a.m. due to a faulty bearing on one of the freight cars. Although this mishap didn’t result in an actual derailment, Roedner conceded that it shut down the town’s railroad crossings for several hours as workers struggled to overcome the malfunction.

“All three crossings in Elon are closed,” Roedner went on to confirm at about 10:30 a.m. “The railroad has a crane on site to lift the broken car off the tracks and reconnect the train to move it along.”
