Here’s a look at Week 2 matchups for Alamance County football teams:
Cummings at Western Alamance
Both teams played opponents from Rockingham County last week, with Cummings topping visiting Eden Morehead while Western lost at Reidsville.
Western is unbeaten in the last 11 meetings (10-0-1) with Cummings, with the tie coming two years ago when lightning caused the game’s suspension and horrific field conditions followed. “That was the right call,” Cummings coach David Grimm said of cutting short the game with the score tied.
The Warriors won 35-14 last year at Cummings, with Western scoring four fourth-quarter touchdowns by four different players. Among those players, only James Newton remains on the Western team.
Southern Alamance at Durham Jordan
These teams met the past two seasons in DAC-VII Conference games, but Southern has been reassigned to a Class 3-A league and so this is a non-conference matchup.
Southern won meetings the past two seasons by 33-26 and 44-36 scores in late-October games.
Durham Jordan dropped a 35-31 road game to Cardinal Gibbons to open the season despite 314 rushing yards and four touchdowns from junior running back Amareon Blue, son of North Carolina football’s assistant strength and conditioning coach and former Tar Heels captain A.J. Blue. Amareon Blue, who gained 2,442 rushing yards with 30 touchdowns last year, holds college offers from Division I teams.
Southern blew out visiting Graham 73-0 in last week’s opener despite senior running back Jackson Parrish missing the game while nursing an injury.
Williams at Eastern Guilford
This is the only game involving an Alamance County team this week in which both teams are unbeaten.
Eastern Guilford rolled past host Northern Guilford, which faced Williams in a preseason scrimmage, by a 39-11 score last week for a successful debut under new coach Tim Bagamary.
Williams beat visiting Eastern Guilford 41-20 last year to end the Wildcats’ five-game winning streak in the series.
The Bulldogs are trying to win road games in back-to-back weeks for the first time since 2021 – October 29 at Roxboro Person and November 5 at Wilson Fike.
Eastern Alamance at Southeast Alamance
Eastern Alamance will try to spoil the first varsity home game in school history at Southeast.
Several players at the new school were at Eastern during the last school year. Southeast coach Tony Aguilar was a long-time assistant coach under Eastern coach John Kirby.
Southeast is the only 2023 opponent for Eastern that the Eagles didn’t play last year.
Eastern, which topped host Eastern Randolph in its opener, has won eight straight meetings with in-county teams.
Southeast is a Class 2-A school, and this will be the second and final non-league foe for the Stallions, who lost at Class 3-A Orange last week.
