Southeast Alamance was the only Alamance County wrestling team to make it into the team portion of the wrestling postseason, and the Stallions pulled off two upsets in the Class 2A dual team state playoffs Saturday.
Both meets came down to the final two matches, with the Stallions prevailing behind the efforts of Ajani Mungroo and Trey Trollinger.
As the No. 12 seed in the East Region, Southeast was assigned to Louisburg, where it topped fifth-seeded Southwest Onslow 45-35 in the first round. Later in the day in the second round, the Stallions knocked off fourth-seeded Louisburg 45-35.
Against Southwest Onslow, the Stallions finished with pins from Mungroo (126 pounds) and Trollinger (132)
With the order revised for the second round, the Stallions upended Louisburg with closing pins from Mungroo (132) and Trollinger (138).
Against Southwest Onslow, Southeast’s other winners by pins were Rodney Pringle (165), Maleek Booker (190), Jack Jennings (285), and Judah Robinson (113), while Troy Cain (150) won by decision and Landon Yates (138) had a forfeit.
In the clash with Louisburg, Pringle (157), Winston Hazeley (175), Booker (215), and Jennings (285) were winners on the mat along with forfeits picked up by Dylan Lee (190) and Robinson (113).
So that set up Southeast with a regional semifinal against top-seeded and 2024 state runner-up Seaforth, which is the region’s top seed. That clash between Mid-Carolina Conference teams was scheduled for Wednesday night at Seaforth.
Also at that site, third-seeded Bunn and 10th-seeded Ayden-Grifton were to meet in the other regional semifinal. The semifinal winners were slated to meet later Wednesday for a spot in the state final.
The regional champion advances to the Class 2-A state final at 3:00 p.m. Saturday at the coliseum fieldhouse in Greensboro.
Bartlett Yancey also was in the Class 2-A East Region, holding the No. 14 seed. The Buccaneers lost by 55-19 to host and third-seeded Bunn in the first round.
