Ward tapped to be Graham High athletic director

Kyle Ward, current assistant athletic director and physical education department chair for Graham High School, will assume the role of athletic director for the Red Devils on July 1 after Mike Williams, longtime athletic director and coach for Graham, announced his retirement effective June 30. Williams has served as Graham’s athletic director for 27 years and has taught and coached at the school for 35 years.

A Graham High graduate from the Class of 1990, Ward began his coaching and physical education teaching career in the Graham zone 23 years ago after graduating from Elon University. For the past 18 years, Ward has taught physical education at Graham High and coached basketball for the men and women, as well as men’s tennis.

Ward helped guide three teams to the 2A Women’s State Basketball Championship games in 2007, 2008 and 2009. He was named Mid-State 2A Conference Coach of the Year in Men’s Tennis in 2005, and in Women’s Basketball in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011.

In addition to teaching and coaching duties, Ward serves on the school leadership team and mentors new teachers also serving as a cooperating teacher for student teachers through Elon University. He is the father of three daughters, Jordyn, Madison, and Kylie Ward.
