Braylen Gwynn and Kylon Richardson each scored two touchdowns as Western Alamance’s football team whipped visiting Southern Wayne 56-0 in Friday night’s Class 5-A first-round game of the state playoffs.
The Warriors, seeded No. 13 in the East Region, received contributions from three different quarterbacks in compiling 255 yards through the air.
Western (6-5) will travel to fourth-seeded Croatan (9-1) for Friday’s second round. The Warriors advanced past the first round for the second time in a six-season stretch.
Richardson had two touchdown receptions and Brock Curry had another. Ethan Oakley made five catches for 59 yards.
Christian Payton and Chance Johnson also ran for touchdowns. Gwynn rushed for 101 yards on six carries.
No. 20 seed Southern Wayne (4-7) was limited to 104 yards of total offense. Carson White and Matthias Satterfield both had one sack and Bryan Gwynn recovered a fumble.
Southern Wayne entered the playoffs with its most victories since going 6-4 in 2011, which also was the last time the Saints had a winning record.
Class 4-A
At Randleman, Cummings couldn’t contain Randleman’s rushing attack in a 48-24 loss in the East Region.
No. 21 seed Cummings (1-10), which trailed 21-6 at halftime, gave up 281 yards on the ground.
Randleman’s Christian McNair gained 143 yards on 15 carries and Trey Burnett posted 130 yards on 20 attempts.
Cummings’ Jazian Bigelow rushed for a game-high 168 yards on 26 carries. Hudson Pressley threw for a touchdown to Semaj Wright and was intercepted once, finishing with 77 passing yards.
Randleman quarterback Reid Herring threw for two touchdowns, with those scoring throws going to Lincoln Lawson and Henry Frye.
Cummings faced a Randolph County opponent for the first time since losing to Eastern Randolph during the 2012 regular season.
Late in the first half, a scuffle took place with multiple players involved. Officials announced that every player on both teams was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, meaning another unsportsmanlike infraction for any individual would have resulted in an ejection.
No. 12 seed Randleman (5-6) goes to fifth-seeded Reidsville (7-3) for the second round.
