Western Alamance’s boys’ soccer team, which holds the No. 2 seed for the Class 3-A East Region in the state playoffs, has made it through two rounds.
Western, the Central 3-A Conference champion, began the playoffs by receiving two goals apiece from Camden Oliveira and Grant Bacchus in a 7-1 whipping of No. 31 seed Northside-Jacksonville (10-12-2) on Saturday. Caleb Akers, Noah Barrett, and Brian Villanueva-Herrera had Western’s other goals.
Tuesday night’s 3-1 victory against No. 18 seed White Oak (11-10-4) came with the Warriors scoring the only two second-half goals. Bacchus, Oliveira, and Konner Johnson had the goals.
Western (21-1) plays a third-round home game Thursday night against No. 26 seed Dixon (17-9), which has won twice on the road. If the Warriors win, they’re home again Saturday.
- No. 16 Williams had its season end in Tuesday’s second round with a 4-0 loss at top-seeded First Flight (20-0).
The Bulldogs (17-8-1) surrendered two goals in each half.
In the first round, Willams won 1-0 against No. 17 seed Northern Nash (9-6-4) on Aurelio Figueroa’s goal Saturday at Burlington Memorial Stadium.
- Orange (16-6), the Central 3-A Conference runner-up, was also in the playoffs as the No. 14 seed. The Panthers defeated No. 19 seed Swansboro 1-0 and then lost by 4-1 at third-seeded Southern Nash.
Class 2-A
Mid-Carolina Conference champion Southeast Alamance is the No. 7 seed in the East Region.
The Stallions rolled in a 10-0 whipping of No. 26 seed SouthWest Edgecombe (13-8-2) to open the playoffs Saturday.
Next, Southeast drubbed 23rd-seeded North Lenoir 6-0 on Tuesday. North Lenoir finished 10-13-1.
The Stallions (17-6) visit second-seeded Wallace-Rose Hill (22-3-2) on Thursday.
- The season ended for No. 22 seed Graham (15-7-2) with a 5-1 first-round loss at No. 11 seed Washington, which scored three first-half goals and improved to 19-2-1.
Class 1-A
No. 19 seed River Mill lost 2-1 at No. 14 seed Henderson Collegiate, which moved to 12-11-2. Matthew Light scored for the Jaguars (9-9-2).
Girls’ tennis
Bishop McGuinness topped Roxboro Community 5-0 in Class 1-A to become one of four dual team state champions Saturday at Burlington Tennis Center.
The other winners were Pine Lake Prep (5-3 vs. Research Triangle) in Class 2-A, Fayetteville Sanford (5-4 vs. Lake Norman Charter) in Class 3-A and Charlotte Providence (5-3 vs. Cardinal Gibbons) in Class 4-A.
