Ashtyn Whitfield of Western Alamance placed fifth in the Class 5-A state tournament for girls’ golf, while two Williams golfers placed in the top 10 in Class 6-A.
The two-day tournaments – both held Monday and Tuesday at Stonebridge Golf Club in Monroe – were reduced to 27 holes because of rain.
Whitfield, a senior, shot 16-over-par 88 for 18 holes and 40 for the next nine, with the 128 total leaving her 17 strokes off the first-place tally by East Lincoln’s Kennedy Gallentine.
Western senior Layne Pittard was at 157 (101, 56) to tie for 35th place.
In Class 5-A, junior Gabriella Moorehead of Williams had scores of 76 and 40 for 116 and sixth place. Freshman teammate Deborah Monahan finished at 120 (78, 42) in a tie for 10th place.
The Southern Alamance senior duo of Riley Bush at 122 (83, 39) and Eva Robinson at 126 (83, 43) were 12th and 13th.
Other scores included Williams’ Drew Johnson (88-50—138) tied for 28th and Caroline Conner (100-46—146) and McKinley Metts (98-48—146) tied for 37th. Southern’s Gillian Lindley (100-51—151), Molly Sulecki (105-52—157), and Daphne Barg (115-57—172) rounded out the area entrants.
Elizabeth Guthrie at 100 (68, 32) of team champion Charlotte Catholic was the medalist. Williams was third and Southern placed fifth in team competition.
- In Class 4-A, Graham’s Marely Torres shot 109 for 32nd place at Longleaf Golf & Family Club in Southern Pines.
Because of weather conditions at various courses used, only the Class 7-A tournament was conducted with 36 holes, while Class 1-A/2-A, Class 3-A, Class 4-A, and Class 8-A were reduced to 18 holes.
Girls’ tennis
Abigail Brown of Williams lost in the first round of the Class 6-A state tournament in singles last Friday at Ting Park in Holly Springs.
South Caldwell’s Ellie Alspaugh defeated Brown 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-0. Alspaugh ended up as the state runner-up, falling to East Chapel Hill’s Samantha Benton by 6-1, 6-0 in the final.
In the dual team state playoffs, third-seeded Western Alamance lost in last week’s Class 5-A East Region fourth round to 10th-seeded Seaforth, which won 7-2.
The dual team state finals will be held Friday and Saturday at Burlington Tennis Center.
Volleyball
Clover Garden reached the championship match of the Class 1-A West Region, falling to top-seeded Leadership Academy in a three-set sweep Tuesday in Kernersville.
Second-seeded Clover Garden ended the season with a 19-8 record. Leadership Academy (22-7) will meet Falls Lake (27-4) in the title match Friday afternoon at Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem.
Clover Garden defeated No. 14 seed Highlands 25-20, 25-20, 21-25, 27-25 in the regional semifinals Saturday. Clover Garden eliminated Central Tar Heel 1-A Conference rival River Mill, the 10th seed, in a three-match sweep last Thursday. River Mill ended with a 12-15 record.
- In Class 5-A’s East Region, No. 8 seed Western Alamance’s season ended with last Thursday’s 25-14, 25-11, 25-18 third-round loss at top-seeded Cedar Ridge. The Warriors finished with a 16-8 record.
