Williams dance team earns national award

The 2022-2023 Williams High School (WHS) Dance Team was celebrated on Tuesday, May 23, at a Trophy Ceremony as the 2023 NDA (National Dance Alliance) Intermediate Hip Hop National Champions. At the ceremony, held in the foyer of the Williams Gym in front of family, friends, WHS staff members and community supporters, the Williams Dance Team officially presented their National Championship Trophy and Banner to Athletic Director Todd Davis, to be showcased permanently at the school.

This group of dancer-athletes brought home the first national title in the 20-year WHS Dance team program history. The 22-23 Williams Dance Team became National Champions by winning first place in the Intermediate Hip Hop Division. In addition, they placed 9th in the Intermediate Pom Division.

The 2022-2023 Williams Bulldogs Dance team is a group of sixteen dancer-athletes, along with Head Coach Abby Moser Overman (WHS 2009 alum) and Assistant Coach Kenzie Newton (WHS 2018 alum), who spent last summer and all school year practicing dance technique and uniformity, attending camps, supporting Williams Bulldogs athletic teams, increasing school spirit, and representing Williams High School in the community.

To qualify for NDA Nationals, dance teams must earn a bid at camp with a minimum technical score. Not only did this team qualify, they earned a Gold Bid. Of the 480 teams invited to the competition, only five North Carolina high school teams were represented, and of those five, only two were public schools.
