McMichael Mills, a yarn manufacturer, has notified the state Department of Commerce that the company will close its Burlington facility this spring, resulting in 81 layoffs.
McMichael Mills has filed a “Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification” (WARN notice) with the state commerce department, announcing its intention to close its facility at 2050B Willow Springs Lane, which is near Apollo Chemical, in Burlington, effective April 27.
Federal law requires businesses with at least 100 full-time employees to provide 60 days’ notice of any planned closure that will result in mass layoffs.
McMichael Mills is a yarn manufacturer founded in 1993 by Dalton L. (Mac) McMichael, according to the company. McMichael Mills also has two manufacturing facilities, as well as its corporate headquarters, in Mayodan.
This marks the first announcement of a business closure in Alamance County resulting in mass layoffs so far this year, according to the state commerce department.
By comparison, no companies in Alamance County announced layoffs due to planned closures in 2023, based on WARN notices on file with the commerce department.
