Youth soccer team advances to nationals

The Alamance Gold under-13 boys’ soccer team went unbeaten this month in the U.S. Youth Soccer’s National League’s Southeast playoffs in Greensboro to earn a spot in the National League Cup finals this summer in St. Louis.

Alamance gold defeated a Mississippi team 6-0 with two goals apiece from Cameron Hampton and Maddox Jones, while Romeo Benitez and Michael Mazzei both added one goal and Noah Rivera provided three assists. While defeating a Florida team, Hampton and Rivera posted two goals apiece. Alamance Gold played a 2-2 draw with the Georgia state champion, with Xavier Barillas and Hampton scoring.

Goalkeeper Trace Dennison recorded two shutouts and then made 11 saves against the Georgia opponent. Coach Jose Alvarenga said Omar Casillas, Massimo Monroe, Evan Miller and Barillas were among defensive standouts. Alvarenga said team captains Benitez, Casillas, Monroe and Rivera have set a positive tone.

The National League Cup finals will be held July 6-9.
