Warren Gene “Dusty” Rhodes, the namesake of the football stadium at Elon University, died Monday at his home in Gibsonville. He was 94.
He’s survived by his wife, Peggy. The Rhodes family provided key funding for what became Rhodes Stadium, giving the school an on-campus outdoor venue as the centerpiece of the athletics complex. The first football game at the stadium was held there in 2001.
He worked a variety of jobs and moved to North Carolina in 1990. After retirement, Rhodes became involved in Elon’s athletic department. He was named a trustee at the college in 1997.
In 2011, he was elected as a lifetime trustee. He’s also a recipient of the university’s Elon Medallion.
Rhodes is also survived by sons David and Larry and daughter Jennifer. A celebration of life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday at St. Mark’s Church in Burlington.
