Governor visits Southern High School

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper visited Southern High School on Wednesday afternoon as part of his “Year of Public Schools” tour.  Cooper is pictured above with students in Southern’s award-winning Future Farmers of America program inside the greenhouse at Southern.

Other photos show various local politicians who were on hand to welcome the Governor.

Southern’s Future Farmers of America chapter is one of the largest such chapters in the state. The school’s FFA chapter won two national competitions last year, becoming just the third-ever school to achieve that distinction. Agriculture is an important part of Alamance County and North Carolina’s economy, and the Southern Alamance FFA program is another example of how public schools help to prepare students to be ready for the jobs of today and tomorrow.

Cooper’s tour is intended to advocate for what he describes as “fully funding” K-12 education, as well as increased spending for early childhood education and teacher pay, during the upcoming legislative session that convenes in late April.
