Western Alamance’s deepest playoff run in girls’ basketball in 24 years ended with Friday night’s 52-44 loss at South Central in the Class 3-A East Region semifinals.
Fourth-seeded Western finished the season with a 23-7 record. Top-seeded South Central (28-2) meets third-seeded Fayetteville Sanford (25-5) on Tuesday in Winston-Salem in the regional final.
Of Western’s seven losses, the Warriors scored less than 50 points in four of those games. On another, they were under the 50-point mark in regulation of an overtime setback.
South Central avenged a 55-48 defeat from mid-January. In that matchup, Western trailed by one point entering the fourth quarter.
Elon men out of CAA
It was a short stay for Elon’s men’s team in the Coastal Athletic Conference Tournament.
The 11th-seeded Phoenix lost 56-55 to last-place Hampton in Friday’s first round at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington.
Kyrese Muller hit the game-winning shot with 6.3 seconds left after Elon had rallied from a double-digit deficit down the stretch. The Phoenix had the game’s final shot, but Isaac Harrell was off the mark on a 3-point attempt.
T.K. Simpkins scored 18 points, Sam Sherry had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Harrell provided a season-high 10 rebounds for Elon (13-19). Hampton (9-23) won a CAA Tournament game for the first time.
