A man from High Point was fatally struck by a train Monday while he was walking along a stretch of railway that passes through Burlington.
According to Burlington’s police department, 57-year-old David Prescott McConico was heading northwest along the train tracks when he was overtaken by a westbound train at about 12:50 p.m.
The collision ultimately occurred near the railroad overpass along Fisher Street – in spite of the engineer’s attempts to get McConico’s attention as the train barreled through at about 40 miles an hour.
According to the police department, McConico was pronounced dead at the scene, while rail traffic came to a halt for two and a half hours as investigators tried to piece together the circumstances that led to his death.
The police department acknowledged that the case was still under investigation when it identified the deceased shortly before 7:00 p.m.
