Police in Burlington have arrested a 51-year-old woman for a hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a pedestrian earlier this week.
Irma Hernandez was ultimately taken into custody on Tuesday for her alleged role in this fatal collision, which occurred at about 4:00 that morning at the intersection of South Church Street and Glendale Avenue.
According to the city’s police department, Hernandez was speeding when she struck 36-year-old Alicia Cearley, who was pronounced dead when paramedics arrived on the scene. Hernandez allegedly drove off after the accident. She has consequently been charged with felony hit-and-run resulting in death, as well as exceeding a safe speed and driving without a license.
According to the police department, Hernandez was released after her arrest on a written promise to appear in court.
Josh Light, an assistant chief with the city’s police force, insists that the absence of a bond in this case isn’t his agency’s doing.
“We do not set any of the bonds,” Light told The Alamance News on Wednesday. “That is the judicial official’s decision. We have no control over it.”
