A tranquil weekday morning was abruptly shattered on Friday when a murder-suicide ended the lives of an estranged married couple on the outskirts of Burlington.
This deadly domestic drama apparently opened at about 7:00 a.m. when Victor Vega shot his wife Lourdes outside the couple’s former marital home at 3331 Beaver Creek Road.
According to the office of Alamance County’s sheriff, Lourdes, who was in her mid 40s at the time of her death, had remained in the dwelling since she and her husband separated, while Victor, who had been in his early 50s, decamped to an apartment in Burlington. Victor Vega had nevertheless returned to his old home on Friday morning, and he apparently shot his wife dead as she tried to escape to a neighboring residence.
According to witnesses, Victor Vega returned to 3331 Beaver Creek Road after the shooting, while the sound of gunshots soon drew a battalion of sheriff’s deputies to this well-to-do neighborhood south of Burlington’s municipal limits.
According to the sheriff’s office, the agency’s deployments included members of its special response team, who used remote-controlled drones to ascertain Victor Vega’s exact whereabouts. The team’s members eventually found him in the garage, where he had apparently succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The sheriff’s office concedes that it had no history of calls to the residence at 3331 Beaver Creek Road prior to Friday’s events.
