QUESTION: When is Webb Avenue/NC 87 scheduled to be resurfaced in Burlington?
ANSWER: Although the city of Burlington maintains more than 200 miles of street, it yields this duty to the North Carolina Department of Transportation for some of its busiest thoroughfares.
According to the city, the state is responsible for maintaining the entire span of Webb Avenue from one end of the city limits to the other. Moreover, the state’s transportation department has already hired a contractor to resurface this roadway – the lion’s share of which is expected to have a fresh coat of asphalt by September of this year.
Documents on the NCDOT’s website indicate that the state bid out a multimillion-dollar resurfacing contract last fall for both NC 87 and State Route 1719 (which includes portions of Sellars Mill Road and Pomeroy Street). All told, the state asked contract bidders to estimate the cost to mill, resurface, and stripe 7.03-miles of roadway, including the entirety of Webb Avenue.
The state ultimately awarded this contract to the Fred Smith Company on October 20 after the Raleigh-based contractor beat out two other contenders for this project. According to the NCDOT, Fred Smith had submitted a low of bid of $3,205,254.10, which came in at 7.1 percent below the state’s estimated cost for the work.
According to the NCDOT, Fred Smith began work on this project on June 10 of this year and is expected to have the whole thing wrapped up by May 1, 2025. The state has nevertheless set an interim deadline for the portion of Webb Avenue that runs from NC 49 to Fisher Street. According to letting documents, the work on this section, “including pavement markings and markers,” should be concluded by September 6.
