A local builder has been arrested for fraud after several of his clients accused him of taking payments for work that he never completed.
Danny Chapman Lynch was ultimately taken into custody on Friday based on charges lodged by both the office of Alamance County’s sheriff and the municipal police department in Burlington.
According to the sheriff’s office, the 69-year-old white male, who hails from 3668 Kimesville Road, had initially wound up in the sights of its investigators in May when they received a complaint from one of his clients in the southern part of the county. This disaffected customer said that she had hired Lynch to remodel her home in 2022 – only to have him accept $161,757.28 in payments without actually completing the work.
As the sheriff’s office proceeded with its investigation, detectives in Burlington were apparently building some cases of their own against the Alamance County contractor.
According to arrest warrants that the city’s police department obtained Friday, Lynch had taken on jobs for two other clients in 2022. He went on to accept a combined sum of $55,072 from these individuals without ever completing the work they commissioned or refunding the money they paid.
The city’s police department went on to charge Lynch with two felony counts of obtaining property by false pretense on top of a third count of this same offense that the sheriff’s office has filed.
Court records indicate that on Monday, Burlington’s police department added a fourth count to these charges in view of another, more recent complaint, which accuses Lynch of pocketing $6,887.50 for the installation of EZ Breeze windows that he never put in.
According to the sheriff’s office, Lynch was originally issued a combined bond of $150,000 following his arrest Friday. Court records indicate that the sum was later reduced to $32,500, although an additional $20,000 has since been tacked on to his bond for the latest charge filed by Burlington’s police department.
