It was an NFL preseason game, but memorable nonetheless for Joshua Karty.
The Western Alamance alum kicked the game-winning extra point when the Los Angeles Rams defeated the visiting Dallas Cowboys 13-12 on Sunday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
The Rams scored their only touchdown with four seconds to play and Karty, a rookie, followed with the extra-point boot.
“It was very loud after the touchdown,” Karty told reporters after the game.
“Haven’t really experienced that before much of my career. And it was same thing as normal, though, just trying to rally the guys in, get them ready for the extra point instead of celebrating the touchdown, make sure we don’t run out of time on the play clock, and then, yeah, same thing as always.”
The Rams drafted the kicker in the spring out of Stanford.
“It felt like a real game out there,” Karty said.
He was also good on his lone attempts on field goals with first-half kicks from 28 and 39 yards. He expressed disappointment on one of his kick-offs, but overall told reporters it was a fun time.
“It’s just something to improve on, and everything is a learning experience,” he said. “Got better today, and just excited to move forward and get better next week.”
Among the thrills was having his parents in attendance. Joel and Valarie Karty traveled from North Carolina.
“I have the best supporting system with my parents, and couldn’t ask for anything better,” Karty said.
