Burlington’s city council has given its blessing to a rezoning request that will allow a row of new townhomes to go up on a now-vacant parcel near Garden Road’s juncture with St. Mark’s Church Road.
The council gave its unanimous nod to this request on Tuesday, clearing the way for homebuilder Matthew Szalecki to construct several “single-family attached dwellings,” or townhomes, on this .64-acre lot at 3755 Garden Road.
Framed as a “limited use” form of high-density residential zoning, Szalecki’s request would effectively double the potential number of units allowed on the property. Szalecki has nevertheless agreed to rule out any uses other than the one stipulated in his request – a point that Burlington’s mayor Jim Butler emphasized before the council’s 5-to-0 vote in the applicant’s favor.
“There’s 114 allowable uses,” he explained after a perfunctory public hearing, “but they’ve reduced that to one.”
