Elio Anguiano scored three goals as Southeast Alamance clinched the outright Mid-Carolina Conference boys’ soccer championship by defeating host Cummings 7-1 on Wednesday night.
It’s the first team conference championship in any sport for the 2-year-old school.
The Stallions hold a 10-game winning streak. They led 2-1 at halftime, then Bailey Frye and Anguiano scored in a span of less than 20 seconds to spark a five-goal spree across the final 19 minutes.
Issac Gonzalez, Diego Gonzalez and Edgar Carbajal also scored for Southeast (15-6 overall, 11-1 Mid-Carolina Conference).
Josue Alvarez had the goal for Cummings (4-11, 1-10).
On Monday night at third-place Graham, Southeast won 5-2 to remain one game ahead of Jordan-Matthews. Frye and Carbajal each scored two goals and Anguiano had the other goal.
- Western Alamance completed a sweep of Central 3-A Conference games, improving to 12-0 in league play by drilling host Southern Alamance 7-0 on Monday night.
Noah Barrett scored three goals, Camden Oliveira tallied twice and Luis Guerrero and Dominic McNerney both scored once. Six of the goals came in the second half as the Patriots moved to 19-1 overall.
- Williams, which ended up third in the Central 3-A Conference, won its fourth consecutive game by rolling past host Roxboro Person on Monday.
Aurelio Figueroa had three goals and Sebastian Vargas Aleem notched two goals. Ethan Massai, Andy Aguilera, Daniel Angel and Jonathan Yorke all had one goal.
Angel and Figueroa both scored twice when the Bulldogs defeated host Cedar Ridge 4-0 last week.
- Because the state playoffs are delayed as teams in the western part of the state impacted by Hurricane Helene try to make up games, teams were permitted to add games. Southeast will play at Chapel Hill on Monday and home against Orange on Wednesday.
Williams added Monday night’s game at Northwood.
Volleyball
Southern Alamance won two road matches in the Class 3-A state playoffs before bowing out.
The Patriots, seeded No. 27 in the East Region, toppled No. 22 seed Northern Nash 25-23, 14-25, 18-25, 25-16, 17-15 in the second round.
The season ended for Southern (12-13) with Saturday’s third-round defeat at No. 19 seed Roxboro Person by 25-16, 15-17, 25-10. It marked the Patriots’ fourth loss to the Rockets, who are also Central 3-A Conference members.
- Second-seeded West Carteret defeated No. 15 seed Western Alamance 25-18, 28-26, 25-13 in the second round.
The Warriors finished with an 18-6 record, marking their highest win total since 2017.
Girls’ tennis
Abigail Brown of Williams made it to the singles semifinals of the Class 3-A state tournament at Burlington Tennis Center.
Eventual champion Pauline Bui of Fayetteville Sanford defeated Brown 6-4, 6-0.
Bui topped Carrboro’s Ryan Hanes 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the final.
The doubles title went to Fayetteville Sanford’s Loren Galaviz and Jenny Wang.
