Williams has a vacancy for a baseball coach with Brent Haynes leaving the school after one season.

Haynes accepted the position as baseball coach at Northwood High School in Pittsboro, which announced the hiring last week.

Haynes, a 2006 Southern Alamance graduate and an assistant coach for the Patriots in 2022, will be head coach at a third school in as many seasons in 2025. He coached Eastern Randolph in 2023 before taking the Williams job.

Williams athletics director Bob Grant said he was aware for a few weeks that the Bulldogs might have a vacancy to fill and that the open position has been posted. Grant has been at Williams for about a year, arriving a couple of months after Haynes’ hiring.

The Bulldogs baseball team went 18-6 last season, placed third in the Central 3-A Conference and reached the second round of the Class 3-A state playoffs. That record included a 7-1 non-conference victory against Northwood, which had a 10-13 record but placed second in the Mid-Carolina Conference with a 10-4 mark in its first season in that league after moving down from Class 3-A.

The Chargers, a Class 2-A team, compete in the nine-school Mid-Carolina Conference, which is a split Class 1-A/2-A league that includes Cummings, Graham, and Southeast Alamance.

Kyle Robinson had coached Northwood for two seasons, receiving Coach of the Year honors in the Mid-Carolina Conference last spring.

At Eastern Randolph, Haynes’ team went 8-19 but reached the Class 1-A West Region finals. As a player, Haynes was a junior on Southern’s 2005 state-championship team.

Haynes will teach social studies at Northwood.
