Gov. Roy Cooper has appointed C. Douglas “Doug” Green to fill the superior court vacancy created by the retirement earlier this fall of senior resident superior court judge Tom Lambeth. Green will serve for the remainder of Lambeth’s term, through December 2026.
Cooper had appointed Green earlier this year, in February, to a district court judgeship to complete the term (ending Dec. 2024) of Republican district court judge Rick Champion who resigned a year ago to accept the position as Alamance County’s first public defender.
But Green, a Democrat, lost his bid for election to a full term to the district court bench in November to Republican county commissioner Craig Turner. Green received 41,094 votes (46.81%) to Turner’s 46,689 (53.19%).
“Judge Green has the experience and knowledge of the district to be a skilled Superior Court Judge,” said Governor Cooper. “I am grateful for his commitment to continue serving the people of Alamance County.”
Previously, Green served as an assistant attorney general in the North Carolina Department of Justice. Additionally, he worked as an attorney with the Smith Giles law firm in Graham, and as an assistant district attorney in the Alamance County district attorney’s office.
Green, a Williams High School graduate, received his Bachelor of Arts from Duke University, his Masters in Business Administration from Elon University and his Juris Doctor from the North Carolina Central University School of Law.
Green, who grew up in Alamance County, is also well known for his prowess on the football field – first at Williams High School and later at Duke University.
At Williams, he was an honor student and lettered in four sports and was All State in football. He received an athletic scholarship to Duke where he was a standout wide receiver.
Green is the father of two teenagers, a daughter and son. He is married to Julie Dixon-Green, Associate Dean of the Hussman School of Journalism at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
In civic organizations, Green is on the board of the Alamance County Community Service Agency and an active participant in the Dream Center-affiliated with City Gate Church of Burlington. He is also on the board of the Alamance Community College Foundation.
For over 35 years, Doug has been a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He is a member of Grace Outreach Ministries in Mebane.
