Undefeated Western Alamance will start its bid for a second consecutive state championship in boys’ soccer as the No. 2 seed in the Class 5-A East Region behind top-seeded Pikeville Aycock.
After a first-round bye, the Warriors (24-0) play Thursday night at home against No. 15 seed Southern Wayne (9-10-2), which topped No. 18 seed Cedar Ridge 3-1 in the first round Tuesday.
Also in the Class 5-A East Region is seventh-seeded Southeast Alamance (15-6-2), which meets No. 23 seed West Carteret (5-11-2) – a 3-0 winner at No. 10 Currituck County (12-9-2) in the first round.
The season ended for No. 22 seed Eastern Alamance (6-17-2) in a 3-0 first-round loss at No. 11 seed Wilson Fike (11-7-3).
- In Class 4-A, No. 13 seed Graham (11-10-2) began East Region play by losing at home by 4-3 to No. 20 seed Southwest Onslow (5-14), which travels to fourth-seeded Washington for the second round.
Cummings (6-9-1) is the No. 17 seed in the bracket, topping No. 16 seed Reidsville 3-1 on Tuesday. The Cavaliers go to top-seeded Southwestern Randolph (22-1) on Thursday.
- In the Class 6-A East Region, Williams (16-5-3) received the final bye as the eighth seed, meaning a second-round encounter Thursday with No. 16 seed Southern Lee (18-7), which eliminated No. 17 seed West Johnston 3-0.
Southern Alamance (4-18) didn’t make the field in Class 6-A.
- In Class 1-A, Clover Garden (17-3) is the West Region, holding the No. 2 seed and receiving a bye before Thursday’s second-round game against No. 15 North Stokes (7-14-2), a 6-0 first-round winner against No. 18 seed Tri-County.
River Mill (6-13) is seeded No. 12 in the Class 1-A East Region with a bye before facing fifth-seeded Woods Charter (13-3-1) in the second round.
Regular season ends
Western completed a sweep of the Mid-Carolina Conference with last week’s 9-0 home victory against seventh-place Southern as Brian Villanueva Herrera, Elio Anguiano, and Kevin Merlo all scored two goals and Franky Maya, Rusdael Vargas, and Carter Kaffenberger each scored one goal.
Second-place Williams finished with a 9-0 home rout of last-place Roxboro Person, with Eddie Alejo and Grant Rasmussen scoring two goals apiece and Arturo Zamora, Ethan Massai, Jaedyn Myers, and Lucas Stroud each scoring once.
Zwe Maung, Noah Teabout and Aiden Hayes scored as third-place Southeast posted a 3-0 home victory against sixth-place Eastern.
Fourth-place Graham and fifth-place Cummings tied 2-2.
