Southeast Alamance’s boys’ basketball team defeated Burlington Christian Academy 70-66 in a spirited nightcap of the Central City Classic on Saturday at Williams High School.
The Stallions rode a key four-point possession late in the game to pull out the victory after losing to BCA in each of the past two seasons at home.
Donnie Fairley and Davian Edwards each scored 18 points and James Kenan posted 17 points for Southeast (3-2).
“We really wanted this one and we came here and got it,” Kenan said. “We knew it was going to be tough and going to be close.”
BCA center Pierce Bowman scored 23 points before fouling out with 1:58 left. Jake Baker had 16 points and RJ Robinson added 10 points.
The Stallions led for most of the game, but BCA (6-5) grabbed leads a few times down the stretch, including on Bowman’s basket to make it 59-58 and on Manny Vanhook’s three free throws to go up 62-61 at the 2:48 mark.
But Kenan drove for a tiebreaking basket and was fouled with 1:21 left.
“I had the ability to drive and help my teammates out,” Kenan said.
He missed the free throw, but Fairley was there for a putback.
“It’s about plays and possessions,” Southeast coach Bo Williamson said. “That turned into a four-point possession for us.”
Nate Yellock hit a 3-pointer on the final shot of the first half to push Southeast to a 40-31 at halftime despite the Stallions tagged with three technical fouls in the first half.
There were five earlier games Saturday after two games Friday night. Here’s a rundown:
- Western Alamance’s girls pulled out a 59-52 victory against Northwood to improve to 2-1.
- Rreanna Johnson produced 31 points and 12 rebounds as Southeast Alamance’s girls remained undefeated with a 74-57 victory against South Central.
Shaniya Paylor racked up 24 points and Inysia McIver had 11 points for the Stallions, who turned a 16-13 deficit after the first quarter into a 42-23 halftime lead.
- The Bishop McGuinness girls recorded a 54-17 decision against previously undefeated Rockingham County, which never scored more than six points in any quarter.
- Western Alamance’s boys couldn’t keep up with Bishop McGuinness in a 60-39 loss. The Warriors fell to 1-2.
- Chapel Hill’s boys bolted to a 24-4 lead on winless Eastern Randolph and went on to an 83-58 victory. Chapel Hill improved to 6-2.
In Friday’s games:
- The Williams girls did the job defensively in a 49-20 romp past Northeast Guilford. The result ended a two-game skid for the Bulldogs (3-2).
- Williams boys lost for the first time in five games this season, falling 78-69 to Northeast Guilford. Colby Elliott had 27 points and Bubba Sims notched 20 points, but the Bulldogs had three players foul out. Williams led 51-50 going to the fourth quarter.
