Salaries for Alamance-Burlington school system employees are being run as a part of the newspaper’s ongoing efforts to provide detailed financial information about local government agencies. The newspaper published salaries for county government and the five largest local municipalities earlier in 2025.
The school system provided the following information for all ABSS employees, all of which is to be publicly available by statute:
- Full name;
- Date of hire;
- Current job title/assigned station; and
- Current annual salary, as of February 1, 2025.
The materials that ABSS furnished in response to the public records request lacked the total compensation received during the previous year (2024), the value of benefits, and assigned locations/schools for approximately 3,870 full-time, part-time, and temporary employees.

ABSS provided current salaries at the time by line item, or type of pay, for each employee.
In other words, regular salary, the local county-paid supplement, coaching supplement (if any), bus driver pay (if any), or any other special pay for individual employees was listed separately, making it difficult to tabulate the “total” salary.
The salary information furnished by ABSS lacked a breakdown of the value of employee benefits such as employer-matching health insurance and retirement contributions.
In response to a request for clarification, ABSS chief communications officer Emily-Lynn Adkins told the newspaper in early 2025 that the employer matching portion for state health insurance benefits is $674.62 per employee, per month and that the employer-matching contribution for retirement benefits represents 24.04 percent of each eligible employee’s gross pay.
Unlike temporary employees who are paid at a daily rate, most ABSS employees are paid on a state salary schedule based on years of experience and level of education, according to the state Department of Public Instruction (DPI).
Certified employees such as principals, assistant principals, teachers, and other staff whose positions require a state educator’s license also receive an annual county-funded supplement, which is calculated as a percentage of their state-funded salaries and is based on consecutive years of employment with ABSS.
The underlying state salaries for most school employees remained unchanged in 2025 by the General Assembly due to the ongoing impasse over a state budget between the state house and state senate.
However, most of the salaries listed should still be accurate. (It is possible that the computer program used by the newspaper may not have calculated everything properly because of coding differences or other technical issues, but the newspaper is confident enough to provide the following information.)

A subsequent public records request filed by the newspaper with ABSS superintendent Dr. Aaron Fleming last month asked for the specific salary adjustments for more than 300 employees that the school board approved during the past six months. The newspaper will run the updated information for employees whose salaries were changed once that information is furnished by ABSS.
