Former Williams player Briahna Scott played a key role in an historic stretch for the Guilford College women’s basketball team this season.
The Quakers won their first 11 games for the best start in program history.
Earlier this season, Scott was dubbed the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week for women’s basketball. That honor came after she made nine steals in the Quakers’ 73-64 late-December victory against Piedmont.
Scott, the only junior on the team, is averaging 12.9 points per game. She had 14 in Friday’s rescheduled home game – an 80-75 victory against Shenandoah. That outcome lifted the Quakers to a 16-3 record.
Matheny hits shot for Davidson
Former Burlington Christian Academy player Brock Matheny scored in a college game for the second time when he hit a 3-pointer for Davidson late in Saturday’s 79-54 men’s basketball victory at Richmond.
Appearing in only his fifth game of the season (and 18th of his career), the senior guard had the game’s final basket. The other basket in his career also was a 3-pointer when he connected last season vs. Virginia Military Academy.
Matheny is the son of former Elon coach Matt Matheny, who rejoined the Davidson coaching staff as an assistant.
Walker waits for next move
The Burlington School alum Zion Walker is taking a redshirt season at Radford with the intention of moving on after the men’s basketball season.
Walker said he’ll enter the transfer portal when that opens in the spring. He was a Radford freshman last season, when he averaged 5.9 points across 27 games before a season-ending injury.
Lawson looks elsewhere
Former Graham player Jaylisa Lawson, who was a mid-year enrollee at Pfeiffer to play women’s basketball about 13 months ago, is no longer at the school. She said she’s working on finishing an associate’s degree and hopes to resume playing collegiately in the next school year.
She played four games with a total of two points for Pfeiffer in the latter half of the 2024-25 season.
