Reigning state champion Western Alamance won three lopsided girls’ soccer games to begin the season.
The results included a 9-0 handling of visiting Lee County last week, then twice defeating Rockingham County this week by scores of 12-0 and 9-0.
Callie Athas had five goals and Kayley Lee and Alison Thomas both scored twice in the Lee County game. Athas had four more goals in the first game this week.
- Eastern Alamance, playing in coach Marisa Camuto’s debut, won 7-0 last week at Jordan-Matthews before Monday’s 1-1 tie with visiting East Chapel Hill. Addison Hughes and Lilly Massey both scored two goals in the Jordan-Matthews game.
- McKinley Metts scored three goals Williams opened the season with Monday’s 9-0 victory at Eastern Guilford. The Bulldogs, with Metts scoring again, then fell 2-1 at Durham Riverside on Tuesday.
- Southeast Alamance began the season with last week’s 1-1 tie with visiting Orange. Layorah Jamison had the Southeast goal.
- Southern Alamance was blanked 1-0 at Northwood on Monday before securing a 10-1 victory against visiting Northern Durham on Tuesday.
- Clover Garden’s season began with Monday’s 6-3 home loss to North Carolina Leadership Academy despite three goals from Logan Coggins.
- River Mill fell 9-0 to visiting Cornerstone Charter on Tuesday.
- Burlington Christian Academy’s first game resulted in Monday’s 13-0 romp at High Point Christian with four goals apiece from Adalyn House and Blakeley Bork and two goals each from Kate Cockman and Anna Claire Ingle.
- The Burlington School is off to a 2-1 start, boosted by Alex Eguren’s six goals and Graylie Jackson’s three goals in a 14-0 rout at Salem Academy and Eguren’s four goals in a 6-5 squeaker vs. visiting St. Thomas More.
Baseball
Mid-Carolina Conference play begins next week, but some teams have been gearing up.
- Western Alamance began the season by defeating visiting High Point Central 15-0 last week, with Ethan Oakley, Danny Primm and Zach Stuart handling the pitching. The Warriors won 12-0 vs. visiting Reidsville on Tuesday.
- Southern Alamance lost 2-1 at Seaforth last week before Tuesday’s 3-1, eight-inning escape at Chatham Charter.
- Eastern Alamance fell 7-3 to host Greensboro Grimsley last week and then suffered a 5-4 loss at Northern Guilford when the Nighthawks scored four sixth-inning runs Tuesday.
- Paxton Piccini homered among his four hits and drove in three runs and Aidan Amick knocked in three runs as Southeast Alamance won 11-9 at Orange on Tuesday after building a 7-1 lead in the top of the third inning.
The Stallions fell 1-0 to visiting Trinity in last week’s opener. Right-hander Lincoln Coble, who’s a North Carolina A&T signee, struck out 13 batters and limited Southeast to two sixth-inning singles.
“We’re going to be there,” Southeast coach Adam Gunn said. “Game 1, nothing to stress over. Not very often on (the first night) you’re facing a Division I guy.”
Ayden Brown was Southeast’s starter, with Tyler Jackson working in relief.
- Burlington Christian Academy, a reigning state champion in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association, opened the season with a 6-2 loss at High Point Christian last week before Monday’s 10-0, five-inning plastering of host Roxboro Community that included three runs batted in by Tanner Aycock and Gatlin Granzyk and Cooper Kelly’s one-hit pitching.
Softball
Eastern Alamance had busy first week, producing a 4-1 record with a 15-6 victory at Roxboro Community, a 5-3 triumph at Northern Davidson, a 10-0 loss vs. South Caldwell and an 11-7 victory vs. Lake Norman before Tuesday’s 11-1 thumping of visiting Roxboro Person in the Mid-Carolina Conference opener.
Rachel Byrd scored three runs and Carley Boggs threw a six-inning two-hitter with eight strikeouts in Tuesday’s game.
Kayden Manning homered twice and Edie Stewart and Brylea Warren also had long balls vs. Roxboro Community, while Stewart and Manning homered in the Lake Norman game.
- Tatum Shelton and Addison Reich both homered and Shelton knocked in three runs as Southeast Alamance topped visiting Southern Alamance 11-1 in 4½ innings in a Mid-Carolina Conference game Tuesday.
Southeast built on its season-opening 11-3 triumph vs. visiting Chatham Central last week when Amarie Contreras had three runs batted in. Contreras and Maiya Woody had home runs.
Southern won its home opener by 10-0 last week vs. Eastern Randolph.
- Western Alamance won Tuesday’s Mid-Carolina Conference opener by 15-0 in three innings vs. visiting Graham. Addison Beal, Ashlyn Petty, Avery Martin and Camryn Rodrigues all drove in two runs.
The Warriors fell 2-1 last week to visiting Northwest Guilford despite Beal striking out 10 batters.
Boys’ lacrosse
Williams began the season with a 16-4 loss to Greensboro Day School last week before Tuesday’s 5-4 setback to visiting Orange.
Many other teams from the county have yet to begin their seasons.
