Former Cummings athlete Drew Williamson was part of the NCAA championship coaching staff with the Michigan men’s basketball team.
The Wolverines captured the national title with Monday night’s 69-63 victory against Connecticut in Indianapolis.
Williamson completed his second season on the Michigan staff. Many of Williamson’s relatives were on hand at Final Four games.
“Such a great experience for all of us,” said Bo Williamson, brother of the Michigan assistant.
Drew Williamson was even joined in the postgame, on-court celebration by his son, Jaden, and daughter, Avery.
The Williamson contingent also included the coach’s wife, Lauren; parents, Burlington’s Vera and Ron Williamson; and Bo Williamson and his wife, Angela, and two daughters.
Drew Williamson, a 2003 Cummings graduate, competed collegiately for Old Dominion before playing professionally in Europe.
He then spent time on Old Dominion’s staff before becoming an assistant coach at Division II Virginia State.
From there, he was on the Florida Atlantic staff before following Dusty May, then the head coach, to Michigan.
It was his second time on the bench for the Final Four with a coaching staff in four seasons after he was part of the Florida Atlantic staff as an assistant coach in 2023. This year, Michigan fans were out in full force for the Final Four games in a nearby state.
“Being there with a Michigan team is different,” Bo Williamson said.
Bo Williamson, who’s the boys’ basketball coach at Southeast Alamance, and Angela also attended the Midwest Regional the previous week in Chicago.
