Veteran men’s basketball coach Steve Robin-son, who served as a longtime member of Roy Williams’ staff at North Carolina, has been hired as a special assistant to Elon coach Billy Taylor.
Robinson moved back to the area following his most-recent role with Arizona in the 2024-25 season. During the past season, he attended some Elon games and practices at Schar Center.
“After taking a year away from coaching and moving to Elon to be closer to family, I am ready to get back to doing what I love, and love what I am doing,” Robinson said.
Robinson was part of the North Carolina coaching staff that directed three national championships.
“Steve Robinson brings an incredible wealth of knowledge and experience to our program,” Taylor said. “He has been part of championship teams at the highest level of college basketball, and his perspective will be invaluable to our coaches and student-athletes.”
Robinson completed his time on North Carolina’s staff upon the retirement of Williams following the 2020-21 season. He spent 18 seasons in Chapel Hill. From there, he became an Arizona assistant coach for four seasons.
He previously worked under Williams as an assistant coach at Kansas after time on coaching staffs at Radford, his alma mater, and at Cornell. But Robinson also ran his own programs as head coach of teams at Tulsa and Florida State. He had a combined record of 110-104 with those two programs.
Among his credentials, Robinson has coached or recruited more than 60 NBA players.
With Elon, Robinson is expected to handle some of the duties that were overseen by Al Seibert, who had been an assistant coach and general manager for the Phoenix for one year. Seibert is no longer with the team after health issues arose during the spring.
