Duke’s Dan Mahan

Coach Manny Diaz announced Tuesday that Walker Eget will be the starter when the Blue Devils open the season vs. Tulane next Saturday, September 5, at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham.

Eget is a sixth-year player who was in San Jose State’s program for five years, playing in 27 career games. He has thrown for 30 career touchdowns and compiled 5,744 yards of total offense. With Eget recovering from a knee injury, Mahan was the primary quarterback during Duke’s spring drills.

“Both guys have a different set of skillsets that we can frame our offense around,” Diaz said. “But when it all came down to it, it was just about consistency, which is normally just what you expect from an older guy of keeping the same level day after day.”

Mahan, who’s entering his second season with Duke, has yet to play in a college game.
