The 18th North Carolina Super Senior will be held next week at Mill Creek Golf Club in Mebane.
The tournament, which is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association, is set for September 22-23. There are divisions for ages 65 and older and 70 and older. It’s a 36-hole, stroke-play event.
Mike Roshelli of Graham won the tournament’s 70-plus division last year at Benvenue Country Club in Rocky Mount.
CGA tournament results
Wade Boteler of Burlington reached the round of 16 in the North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship last month at Woodlake Resort and Country Club in Vass.
Boteler, the ninth seed, fell in 19 holes to eighth-seeded Nathan O’Neal of Wilson.
Boteler advanced through group play via a playoff with Hayesville’s Josh Lendach. The group also included Huntersville’s Colin Ferrick and Cary’s Quin Covington.
Michael Childress of Salisbury later became the champion.
• Also last month, Steve Kidd of Liberty and Steve Harwell of Mooresville combined to finish in a three-way tie for second place in the North Carolina Senior Four-Ball Championship at Cowan’s Ford Golf Club in Stanley. Tee Burton of Shelby and Hunter Grove of Cary were the winners by three strokes at 19-under-par 197.
College results
Alamance Christian School graduate Holden Yakola of Mebane turned in solid results in his first two collegiate tournaments with Guilford College.
Yakola tied for 25th place in the Gate City Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro.
Yakola had the top score for Guilford, which is ranked No. 22 in Division III. He finished at 4-over-par 220.
Earlier this month in his collegiate debut, Yakola tied for 40th at 5-over 221 in the Transylvania Fall Invite at the University Club of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky.
• The Elon women’s team opened the season by winning the Elon Women’s Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Alamance County Club in Burlington.
Lilli Downer of Elon shot 3-under 210 (72, 68, 70) to share medalist honors with William & Mary’s Abigail Avallone. Western Carolina’s Elsa Maren Steinarsdottir was third at 2 under.
Elon’s team score of 9-over 867 was good for a 21-stroke advantage on William & Mary among 15 teams. Assistant coach Mic Potter is serving as Elon’s interim coach.
• For the Elon men’s team, Dylan Lewis was a recent Golfer of the Week in the Coastal Athletic Association based on his 7-under 209 in the team’s season-opening competition in the Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate at Grande Dunes Golf Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Phoenix was the team runner-up behind host Coastal Carolina.
This week, Elon was seventh in the PT Poston Invitational on Sunday through Tuesday at Waynesville Inn & Golf Club. Drew Yeagley of Elon tied for fourth at 10-under 203. South Carolina was the team champion, followed by North Carolina State, and Virginia Tech tied for second.
