An Alamance-Burlington elementary school principal has been charged by the North Carolina Department of Insurance with allegedly attempting to defraud Nationwide Insurance using falsified veterinary invoices.
B.E. Jordan Elementary School principal Robert Grayson Dail, 35, white, male, of 201 Slate Drive, Gibsonville, allegedly submitted “falsified and forged veterinary invoices” to Nationwide Insurance on December 28, 2023, N.C. Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced Friday.
Dail is charged with four felonies, which include: insurance fraud; attempting to obtain property by false pretense; common law forgery; and common law uttering, according to the state insurance department. [State law defines common law uttering as using or passing any false, forged, or counterfeit instrument to another person, knowing the instrument to be forged or counterfeit.]
Dail turned himself in at the Alamance County sheriff’s department last Thursday and was released on a $25,000 unsecured bond. He made his first appearance in Alamance County district court on Friday.
Causey gave no other details surrounding the allegations against Dail. He appears to have no prior criminal record, based on information from the state’s Administrative Office of the Courts and the state Department of Corrections.
Graham attorney Brad Buchanan is representing Dail for the charges, according to the court file.
On Friday afternoon, Buchanan filed a motion for discovery, seeking all documents connected with the charges; the names, addresses, contact information, and written statements that any witnesses may have made related to the charges; an inventory of all physical items that the prosecutor intends to use; and the names of any potential expert witnesses that may be called to testify for the state, among other items.
Alamance County assistant district attorney Kevin Harrison has been assigned to prosecute the case against Dail, the court file states.
