Coaching openings have been posted for girls’ flag football and boys’ volleyball teams across high schools in the Alamance-Burlington School System.
Those two sports have been sanctioned by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association for the upcoming school year.
They were essentially experimental sports during recent years. Southeast Alamance competed in both sports in 2025-26, while Eastern Alamance had a girls’ flag football team.
“Hopefully, we can get the interest for all of our schools,” said Todd Davis, athletics director for ABSS. “If we have interest from the kids, we have the positions and we’re going to get it up and get it going.”
Flag football will be a fall sport, while boys’ volleyball will be contested in the spring. Specific calendars for those sports haven’t been determined, though Davis said there’s a rough idea on how that will go.
“It’s a hurry up and wait,” Davis said of some of the details. “If we can offer those opportunities to the kids, that’s what we’re going to do.”
Flag football teams at Southeast and Eastern had strong participation last year, so Davis said those teams are likely to be in place again.
The spring could be trickier for boys’ volleyball because of the large number of spring sports already available for boys (baseball, golf, lacrosse, tennis, track and field), though not all schools fielded teams in each of those spring sports during the recent spring season.
Davis said there should be a better assessment on potential roster numbers when the new school year begins.
“Summertime is hard to get a good gauge on it,” he said.
