County commissioners voted Monday night to hire Person County manager Heidi York, a 14-year veteran of that county’s top slot, as Alamance County’s new county manager.
While the county’s press release touted unanimous selection by commissioners, the actual vote Monday night was 4-1, with Pam Thompson voting no.
Afterwards Thompson said the reason was York’s salary. County commissioner John Paisley, Jr. refused to answer an Alamance News reporter’s question that night about York’s starting salary.
Officials later provided information that York’s starting salary will be $180,000, about 24 percent higher than outgoing county manager Bryan Hagood’s salary of $144,891. Hagood is retiring after 27 years with the county, the last five as county manager.
York completed her undergraduate degree (in justice and political science) at The American University in Washington, D.C. and received a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She has previously served as an assistant county manager in Durham County, as well as worked in Orange County and for the city manager in Greensboro.
York is expected to begin her Alamance County duties on July 1.
Assistant county manager Sherry Hooks will serve as interim county manager after Hagood’s departure and prior to York’s arrival.
